| Former DEEP PURPLE Keyboard Legend JON LORD Explains From Darkness To Light CompositionFormer DEEP PURPLE keyboard legend JON LORD has posted the following update on the Runboard’s Deep Purple Fan Forum regarding premiering a new composition called From Darkness To Light at the Hell Music Festival 2007 in Trondheim, Norway on Sunday, July 1st: "From Darkness To Light was performed in its original version, which was written specifically for an amateur Church Choir, in my, then, local village Church in Hambleden in Buckinghamshire, England. It was played in, I think, April of 2000 and again at Fawley Court, Henley on Thames in July of that year. It has since been extensively re-written, and is now about ten minutes longer than the original, as well as being much better IMHO, and is also now intended for professional performance. It will be played in Hereford Cathedral in England on the 11th of May, and then at the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim on the 1st of July. Boom of the Tingling Strings and Disguises are both recorded, mixed and ready to be released, as soon as we can arrange a London concert to play the pieces to hang a publicity hat on - probably late 2007/early 2008. In the mean time the piece I have been working on since just before I left DP - Durham Concerto - is nearing completion, and will be recorded in Liverpool with The Royal Liverpool Symphony Orchestra at the end of July. The recording is being released to coincide with the premier in Durham Cathedral in October. Once all that is out of the way, I shall continue to write for The Gemini Band and get myself back on stage - Hammond included - as soon as is possible. Thank you all so much for your interest, and your input; your passion and your humor, and thanks for all the years of support. Please keep the faith and try not to be TOO hard on a band that, in spite of what some of you seem to think, does what it does out of love, and belief in the power of music to unite us all." | Former DEEP PURPLE Keyboard Legend Writing Classical Piece To Celebrate Durham University’s 175th Anniversary According to www.Deep-Purple.net, former DEEP PURPLE keyboard legend Jon Lord is busy writing a classical piece to celebrate Durham University’s 175th anniversary. The Durham Concertos will be performed (and recorded) in October 2007 inside Durham Cathedral by The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. The event should be open to the public with tickets available towards the end of the summer. Durham really seem to be making a big thing of this, their executive committee has a "vision for the Jon Lord composition to act as a catalyst, raising the University’s international profile in key markets." According to the local paper, The Northern Echo, Lord was approached to write the music by the university's vice-chancellor, Sir Kenneth Calman, the Government's former chief medical officer. A university spokeswoman has added: "The work has been specifically composed for Durham University by Jon Lord. It is unclear if Jon Lord himself will be performing. The confirmed date is October 20th 2007 but tickets are still not on sale. In the meantime The Durham Concerto will be recorded in Liverpool with The Royal Liverpool Symphony Orchestra at the end of July, and released on CD to tie in with the Durham performance. In other Lord news, the official Malcolm Arnold website has announced a new performance of Concerto For Group & Orchestra. This will form a centrepiece of the 2007 Malcolm Arnold Festival which will be held at the Royal & Derngate Theatre, in the composer’s hometown of Northampton, over the weekend of October 6/7, 2007. The gala evening concert planned for the main auditorium on Sunday 7th will see Paul Mann conduct Jon Lord and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a special recreation of the original Deep Purple/RPO concert at the Albert Hall. Lord will play the keyboards. The evening is currently structured to run as follows: - Jon Lord : Masque (Jon's musical portrait of Sir Malcolm from his Disguises piece). - Sir Malcolm Arnold : Symphony No.6 (as performed back in 1969). - Interval - Jon Lord : Concerto for Group and Orchestra Tickets for the Concerto for Group and Orchestra at the Royal & Derngate Theatre in Northampton are now on sale: at www.royalandderngate.co.uk | |

The Durham Concerto by Jon Lord was performed by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mischa Darmev at the Durham Cathedral in England on October 20. The concerto, which was packed with more than 1,000 music fans, was commissioned to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Durham University, according to the Sunderland Echo. Check out photos at www.deep-purple.net.Lord, 65, is perhaps best known for his four- or five-minute rock songs, but he has always written longer pieces as well. It was his desire to concentrate on the orchestral works which led him to leave DEEP PURPLE in 2002 | |
