JIMI HENDRIX Adds To Philharmonic's Central Park Fireworks

In a feel-good outdoor concert featuring greatest hits from the classical textbook, the New York Philharmonic appended a splash of acid rock from that unlikely composer, JIMI HENDRIX.

Some 6,000 in the crowd lolling on Central Park's Great Lawn had voted with their mobile phones, American-Idol style, for Hendrix's 'Purple Haze' over 'Flight Of The Bumblebee' by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. It was a fitting end to the two-hour program on a sultry, almost cloudless night in Manhattan that began with Shostakovich and ended with fireworks exploding over the Belvedere Castle. The police estimated attendance at 61,000, according to Philharmonic spokesman Eric Latzky.
