KISS Marvel Comic Book To Be Released In France





According to Kissnews.de, "in June, just in time for the band's return in France with a concert in Bercy (the first in nine years) Wetta will be publishing KISS 1977, French edition of the very first KISS comic book in the history. Deluxe format for this exclusive album which had remained unpublished in French version until now!

A 'variant cover' edition limited to 100 copies will be available for collectors, as well as a Hard Rock Magazine special edition, also limited to 100 pieces.

This mythic comic book (the members of the band had put their own blood into the red ink used for printing it) is the work of Steve Gerber, John Buscema, Sal Buscema and Alan Weiss. It features Gene, Paul, Peter and Ace, attacked by Fatalis, the Fantastic Four's seminal villain! With appearances of famous super-heroes like Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America."

KISS Comment On Belgrade Concert Cancellation


As previously reported, KISS were scheduled to perform in Belgrade, Serbia at USCE Stadium on May 15th but have cancelled the date. Their official statement is as follows:

"We regret that due to security concerns relayed by US government intelligence and the unwillingness of our tour insurance policy to cover our concert, we have been left with no choice but to cancel our show in Belgrade. Because of our excitement at returning to play for our many Serbian fans, we all share in the same disappointment and it is our hope to return soon."

According to a posting on KISS' official web site, KISS just wrapped up "an exciting week of rehearsals" for its "Alive 35" European tour, which begins next Friday in Oberhausen, Germany. "The band is in great spirits and really looking forward to returning to Europe for the first time in over nine years!"

As previously reported, KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer told an Italian radio station on April 16 that the band will perform all songs from its classic "Alive!" release on the forthcoming European leg of the Alive 35 World Tour.

KISS will wear the "Destroyer" costumes for the upcoming trek, which will conclude at the end of June at the Graspop Metal Meeting in Dessel, Belgium.

The band performed live on the "Footy Show" (AFL) on Australian TV on March 13, 2008 and took part in an interview.

KISS Confirm Lake Tahoe Live Date

KISSonline.com is reporting:

"Get ready to rock and roll all night Lake Tahoe, KISS is coming to the South Shore.

John Koster, regional president of Harrah's Northern Nevada operations, made the announcement at the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority Board of Directors meeting today (May 30th).

Koster said with the line-up this year, it definitely could be the best year for the Harveys Outdoor Concert Series.

KISS will be playing August 30 in the Harvey’s Outdoor Arena."

Roy Hilmar Svendsen of Norway's NRK reports that KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons has confirmed what has been some fans' biggest fear for some years now — that KISS are indeed planning to keep KISS running and touring after founders Paul Stanley and Simmons decide to take off the make-up for good.

During a familiar rant by Simmons about how KISS could go on forever, Svendsen asked jokingly if the band would consider looking for replacements for Simmons and Stanley in a TV show, similar to programs like "Rock Star" and "American Idol".

"We have already signed the contract, and it is going to go through in a couple of months," Simmons reportedly replied.

Really?

"Yes, of course!" he confirmed.

In a separate interview, KISS co-founder Paul Stanley was reportedly not very happy to hear about his bandmate's statement regarding KISS' future.

"These things are typical," Stanley said. "Gene says something as if it was a fact, but there is no signed deal. The future has many possibilities. Will it happen next week? No! Am I opposed to the idea? Of course not."

According to NRK, Stanley said that the members of VELVET REVOLVER were planning a similar stunt to find the replacement for lead singer Scott Weiland, who was fired at the end of the band's European tour earlier this year. However, in the end the band decided not to do it, according to Stanley, because of VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash's wish to remain "cool" and credible to his fans.

"I don't have to be that cool," Stanley told NRK with a smile.

Arrow Festival- Netherlands Sunday June 15

The Hottest Band In The World have just performed a killer two hour and fifteen minute set at the Arrow Classic Festival in front of 55.000 new and old fans who are still singing as the band jump into our getaway vans to the blue lights and screeching sirens of our police escort. WE ARE IN A HURRY!

And so another notch in the “Love Gun” as another massive crowd leaves to spread the thunderous gospel of KISS!

Looking more like the victorious winners of some Star Wars boxing championship, steam surrounds the four band members as they run towards our two waiting vans, wrapped in heavy, dark blue robes with towels around their necks. We’re in “Drop and Go” mode, which means as soon as KISS comes off stage, it’s drop clothes and go before we can’t get out.

Paul, Tommy, and Doc are in the first van. Myself. Gene and Eric are in the second van. Gene has a hot towel pressed against his face, as he starts to remove his war paint while Eric is telling our driver that he needs to get closer to the first van. We are already travelling at 80mph so I try to explain that if we get too close and for some reason the first van has to stop, we could all end up in the front van. Paul wouldn’t like that kind of surprise…

The private airport where the Kiss Jet is waiting closes at midnight and is sixty miles away, so we have forty-five minutes to make the sixty-mile journey, plus our luggage is already on its way to Paris. We have to make the deadline or it’s the Motel 6 for us!

It is now 11.50pm. Luckily the escort knows what they are doing, as the lights of the lone runway comes into view, we wave as our escort pulls to one side and we dive though the gates and follow the yellow flashing light of the airport vehicle that will take us onto the runway and on to the Kiss Jet.
We take off and I look at my watch, 11.59pm. We make it with a minute to spare. Whew!

Two hours later, at 2:10am, we check into the famous Le Maurice Hotel in Paris and the Commanders in Chief of the Kiss Army are off to bed.

3.: 40am and I check my E-Mails before ending my day…Fifteen!

The very first is from my close friend and rock journalist extraordinaire Paul Elliott… “Fantastic Show”, says he. Paul had travelled up from London to the Donnington show with three other music journalists. Between them they had seen over 50 Kiss shows. In Paul’s own words “the show had all that Kiss are famous for, plus a fucking great rocking set! I have never heard Paul (Stanley) sounding or performing better, but the heartbeat of the set come from the drummer. Please give the guys a big pat on the back from us”. Our mighty Cat does it again!

And another day in Kissworld comes to a glorious end.
Goodnight."

KISS - Through The Camera Eye: The Truth About KISS Alive

www.KissAsylum.com has published an interview with legendary rock photographer Fin Costello, who reveals the truth about KISS Alive. An excerpt from the discussion appears below.

KA: One of your most famous pictures of all time, is the one that ended up being the album cover for KISS’ breakthrough-album, KISS Alive, from 1975. Unlike anything from their three first album covers, it captures the show, the music and their attitude perfectly. How did you end up working for KISS?

Costello: "I went to live in USA in 1973 with DEEP PURPLE, who I was an art director and photographer for, and a graphic designer I knew was working on an album cover for KISS, called Dressed To Kill. He was very unhappy with it, because the picture was funny but not right. He told me to come and see them play, because they were playing at the Beacon Theatre in New York. That day I had been working with the Brecker Brothers, which is a jazz thing. So I went up there, with my camera and everything. And it was like Dante’s Inferno. As I walked in, I realized I had never seen nothing like it in my life. And this was just the first song.

By this time, they were completely broke. They had no money. I stayed in New York that night, processed the film in an overnight lab, and rang their manager Bill Aucoin in the morning. I told him who I was, mentioned some of my work, like Deep Purple’s Made In Japan, and said that I’d like to him show the pictures I took at the show the night before. He said 'Sure' So I went up there, and their office was about half the size of this studio.

KA: Really? ‘Cause this is a very small studio.

Costello: "Yeah, but that was the KISS Empire. Joyce Biawitz (co-manager) and Bill Aucoin had desks standing against each other. Well, I showed them the photos, and I was smart enough to bring with me a projector from the graphic design place. I asked Aucoin where the projection room was, and he just laughed. Lovely man, by the way. He just laughed and said project them against the wall. I got about 4 pictures projected, and then he said: Don’t show me any more. Then he rang Gene (Simmons) and said: 'Come on down here, I want you to meet this guy.'

So the four of them came down to Aucoin’s office. Ace (Frehley) arrived late and didn’t know what he was there for. But Paul (Stanley) and Gene were very sharp, Gene in particular. The minute he saw how I’d captured the show, he said: 'Right, we’re doing a live album. It’s a last chance-thing. If it works, we’re in business. If it doesn’t work, we’re dead.' Then we went to Detroit and we shot the live album in rehearsal. It’s not a live photograph."

KA: And it wasn’t shot in Cobo Hall in Detroit, even though some of the album was recorded there?

Costello: "That’s right. It wasn’t Cobo Hall. It was shot in the Michigan Palace, which is a car park now, sadly. That was where Iggy, MC5 and all those guys got it together. It was a fabulous place, a very nice Victorian music hall.

Gene got really annoyed in the end. Everybody got very tired, so it became the same pose over and over again. We couldn’t think of a new pose. What we were doing was something Gene called The STATUS QUO-pose. They love Status Quo and that simple, straight-ahead poppy rock. And they did this classic pose, which they had incorporated into their show."

KA: Were the members of KISS familiar with your work?

Costello: "Gene and Peter (Criss) were. The cover is actually influenced by URIAH HEEP Live, a cover with a gatefold and a four page booklet of photographs. That was what they wanted – lot of pictures of the live show.

The interesting thing is, if you look at the back cover on Alive, on the seats right besides the two guys holding the banner, there are two young teenage guys with long hair. They’re on the right side of the picture as you look at it. One is Chad Smith from the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, the other one is his brother. I just found out a few years ago.

The feedback I get on that album is phenomenal. Not only because of the cover, but because it’s an iconic album. It turned American music around."
