MEGADETH Drummer SHAWN DROVER Checks In From The Killing Road




MEGADETH drummer Shawn Drover has issued the following update from the road in Europe:

"Just got offstage 30 minutes ago here (June 26th) in Rijssen, Holland. The show was very good and the fans had a good time as well, but something else happened that put a HUGE smile on just about everybody in the venue tonight. The opening band was a band called 1 BULLET LEFT, comprised of 13-14 year old kids (yes, you read that correctly) and they were AWESOME!!!!!!! Band and crew watched their entire set, and I don't know if I have ever had a bigger smile on my face watching a concert!!!! Their singer-guitarist is one of the sickest death metal screamers alive, (and he made it look effortless to boot) their drummer was equally impressive with his double bass drum assault and good meter - All original material too, and it was good, man! Just watching these kids hammer it out like that put all of us in such a great mood - smiles everywhere tonight."

MEGADETH drummer Shawn Drover checks in with the following message:

"Just thought I would check in to wish all of you well. I am TOTALLY enjoying this summer off, (Well deserved, I might add) with my family and doing "normal" things that would bore just about all of you to tears - truth be told here, for me, it is completely essential for balance purposes, etc.

Needless to say, it's good to be home right now.

MEGADETH drummer Shawn Drover has issued the following update:

"To give a brief synopsis of this tour leg, it has been going very well. Each show has been sold out, with band and audience having a good time. We are really hitting a groove right now, and are still doing a big of "tweaking" to make the setlist as tight as possible before we add/change a song or 2 into the list - We don't want to play something until it is 99.9999999999999% ready, but it will happen, rest assured

This is a killer way for direct contact between band and fan, and nobody keeps in touch more with their fans than Megadeth - This is just the latest avenue for us to prove this notion, and we are all over it, people

As well, it is that time of year once again where band/crew submit our picks for the NFL weekly football pool, which is a fun morale/good-vibe thing we like to do, with the winner being able to remind the losers that they are the champ of the week. I won last week (12 out of 16) and I am going on record now by saying that I will yet again win this week - thank you and good night."

"Man, we had such a great time onstage last night in Osaka, so much so that we played an extra 20 minutes for ya. I want to personally thank all involved with Mr.Udo for making our stay in Japan one to remember for a long time, as well as thanking the fans for enjoying this trip as much as we did!!!!!!!! I am getting ready to board the plane here in Hong Kong to Perth, so just a super quick post to our friends in Australia - SEE YOU SOON!!!!!"

"Turkey?? What Turkey??

I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving yesterday. I unfortunately slept through most of it - I fell asleep during the 2nd quarter of the Green Bay/Detroit game, and woke up during the 4th quarter of the Dallas game. Needless to say, I missed out on most of the food, etc. but man, I needed to sleep - that 16 hour time difference from Brisbane to Atlanta is killing me I feel pretty good today though - I think I am going to take a good walk on this awesome looking Fall day. Ok, enough of that...

As you know, G-OZ went off without a hitch and was a success all around. The crowds were so great, as they always are in the land of OZ - Lots of cool sites as well. The beach in Perth, being my personal fave, as I was there each morning at 7 AM watching the surfers, etc. (The "Damien - Omen 2" birds woke me up each morning, so sleeping in was not an option) All in all, very good memories of my time in Australia... Actually, all of the Pacific Rim tour, come to think of it.

As I write this, I am spending quality time with my family. I am making plan's to go and see the Atlanta Thrashers play my Toronto Maple Leafs, as I have a killer- box seat hook up (Thanks Kelly!) My brother Brian just informed me that my niece, Tara, went to school with Brian Little (great Thrasher player) so I will be paying close attention to him, though ultimately, I do want the Maple Leafs to win. It will be a fun time, regardless.

...And that's what is happening in my world. I guess I can now officially say... "Seasons Greetings".

MEGADETH Drummer SHAWN DROVER - "Fans Are So Proud Of This Band That I Think If You Weren’t Doing A Good Job They’d Let You Know"

When Shawn Drover joined Megadeth in October 2004, his biggest concern wasn’t learning the group’s head-spinning drum parts, but rather being accepted by long-time fans. “Fans of Megadeth are so proud of this band that I think if you weren’t doing a good job, they’d let you know,” Drover says. “I wanted acceptance from the fans, and I think, after more than two and a half years, the consensus is quite positive.”

Positive indeed, especially after the release of Drover’s first studio album with the band, United Abominations, and on the concert DVD That One Night. Drover was hired six days before a recent Megadeth tour, after head honcho Dave Mustaine and crew parted ways with drummer Nick Menza. Drover’s brother Glen had become Megadeth’s lead guitarist about six weeks earlier, and when the drummer spot opened, things were kept familial—especially because Mustaine dug the Drovers’ previous band, Canadian thrash/power outfit Eidolon.

“Dave called and asked me the big question, and I was floored,” recalls Megadeth’s fourth drummer. “Next thing I know I was on a plane.” A few rehearsal days later, Drover was on stage with a group he’s idolized since first hearing Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying twenty years ago. As for the album he plays on, Drover’s proud of his chops on 'Sleepwalker' (“It has a twenty-four-note bass drum pattern and a lot of nuances with the ride cymbal”) and 'Washington Is Next!' (“It has a galloping beat, then cuts loose with this whole speed-metal onslaught”).

Nowadays Drover plays a ddrum acoustic kit. “One of the things that sticks out with it is the two bass drums—20x22s instead of 18x22s. The sound is just explosive.”
