| JON OLIVA'S PAIN - New Album Features " Lost" Material Co-Written With CRISS OLIVA In a recent interview with Rocksomething.com, JON OLIVA'S PAIN / SAVATAGE founder/frontman Jon Oliva revealed that a lot of the songs on the forthcoming JOP album, Maniacal Renderings, were co-written with Oliva's brother Criss, who was killed in 1993 in a car accident. The following is an excerpt from the story: “Writing’s not as enjoyable and it’s a lot harder without Criss,” Oliva admits. “After the accident, Savatage started to get away from the formula that we had going. We struggled to find the right balance and on “Hand Full of Rain” we beat our formula into the ground. I was feeling like we were getting into a rut and I decided to get away from that. The big difference [on “Maniacal Renderings”] is that Criss Oliva co-wrote some of the songs.” The obvious question, of course, is how did that come to be? “My wife found a shoe box packed away and there were a bunch of tapes that had riffs that me and Criss had been working on,” explains the frontman, “I owe my wife a big ‘thankyou’. She came over to me one day with this shoe box and said ,‘Jon is this important?’. I thought it was just a box of shoes, but no, it was all this lost stuff, a lot of cassettes, some as early as 1979 and some that had been recorded just before he passed away. Listening to the tapes was like working with him again, which blows me away. To hear him talking again on tape, I tell you, I’m still walking ten feet in the air!” Fans excited by this extraordinary find will also be pleased to note that there’s a lot more where that came from too. “There are about 35 cassettes and I’ve only got through three or four so far. I’m gonna use as much as I can in the future,” Oliva claims. “There’s lots of jamming and then I’ll hear something great and realise we never made that into a song. So Criss co-wrote some of the songs on the new album which alone makes it worth checking out.” To read the entire interview go to this location. http://www.rocksomething.com/features/featureJonOliva.html | |

| JON OLIVA Discusses Plans For SAVATAGE Anniversary Rock Eyes ( www.rockeyez.com ) has issued an interview with vocalist Jon Oliva ( JON OLIVA'S PAIN, SAVATAGE, TSO), conducted by Brian Rademacher. The following is an excerpt from the interview: Q: Tell us about the Savatage anniversary tour? A: "It’s not going to be a tour. We’re going to do something, not sure what yet. Maybe an album, might do a live thing, film it, and release it as a DVD. There are a couple other options but we haven’t decided yet what we’ll do. It’s just time to find the time do it since we are always busy. We are going to do something once we have the time to do it the right way." Read the full interview at this location. | |

| JON OLIVA: "Every Year Above Ground Is An Important One For Me" Metal-Rules.com has issued an interview with SAVATAGE mastermind JON OLIVA ( JON OLIVA'S PAIN, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA) conducted by Marko Syrjälä. The following is an excerpt: Q: This seems to be an important and busy year for you? A: "Every year above ground is an important one for me!" [laughs] Q: There are lots of rumors of a Savatage tour next year, is that really going to happen? A: "There will be something like that but it won’t be a tour, it’ll probably be just one show. Just kind of to put it to rest, I guess. I don’t know about that because it’s really something that’s out of my control because it involves so many people. It seems to me pretty obvious that since there hasn’t been a Savatage record since 2000, now it’s 2007 so the chances of there being anything new for Savatage don’t look good. That’s my opinion. That could change though if everyone else wants to do it. But, if not… I don’t really know how to answer that question anymore. Nothing is going on, is all I can say. No one has come up to me and said let’s do something. They’ve talked about it but nothing has gone through?" Q: Recently you said that Savatage is completely done, is it really like that? A: "Well, if there hasn’t been a record in seven years; you can’t be much more done than that. [laughs] People ask me this all the time, but if there hasn’t been an album in almost eight years, chances are that we’re pretty much done." Q: What’s the main reason for disbanding Savatage? A: "Trans-Siberian Orchestra. If you like Savatage, just buy those records because that’s like Savatage with different singers. That’s really what it is. Every guy that was in Savatage plays in Trans-Siberian Orchestra. We sell out Madison Square Garden and places like that so what logic would there be for anybody to take that thing and destroy just to play for a couple thousand people in Europe? It’s not going to ever happen. That thing has grossed millions of dollars and no one’s going to destroy it to play some Savatage shows. It doesn’t make any sense. I know if I was in charge of the whole thing, I would be an idiot to break that up. So why can’t people just realize that? It was great, we had 25 years of a great band and now they’ve finally made it, but it’s all the same guys! It’s Jon Oliva, Paul O’Neill, Bob Kinkel, Johnny Middleton, Chris Caffery, Al Pitrelli, Jeff Plate, Alex Skolnick; everyone that’s been in Savatage for the last 10 years is in that band. Even I’m in the fucking band! Even I quit my own band to be in the band that makes the money. Let’s just be logical." Read the full interview at this location. | |
