METALLICA, AC/DC, MOTÖRHEAD, SLAYER - A Hard Winter Lies AheadAFP is reporting:
A hard, heavy metal winter of skulls and studs and brain-thudding sound lies ahead as both
METALLICA and
AC/DC hit the road again along with the likes of
MOTÖRHEAD and
SLAYER. Australian veterans AC/DC, one of the world's best-loved hard rock bands, releases Black Ice on Monday, its first studio album in eight years since Stiff Upper Lip in 2000. The Black Ice world tour, the band's first since 2001, begins in late October in the United States with some of the European dates starting in February already sold out, proof that 53-year-old solo guitarist
Angus Young, who performs in school uniform, can still draw the crowds.
AC/DC, who won't sell tracks on the Internet, has barely changed its tune in 35 years, sticking to blues-tinged rock'n'roll, pounding sound and the raw vocals of Briton Brian Johnson, who took over when Bon Scott died after a night of heavy drinking in 1980. The band, set up by Young and his brother Malcolm in 1973, has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide despite a decline in the 1980s. Among historic albums are
Highway To Hell (1979) and
Back In Black (1980).
Air-splitting heavy metal icons Metallica are also back with their first studio album in five years, with Death Magnetic released in September, and a world tour that kicks off late this month, starting at home. The four California veterans are noisier and darker than ever, doing what they know best -- guitars thrash, drums crash, vocals howl and the pace is heart-stopping.
British heavy metal supremos
Motörhead, formed in 1975 by now 62-year-old bassist, singer and songwriter Lemmy, the band's sole constant member, also tour from late this month with tracks from Motorizer.
ALICE COOPER - the US rock star with the glam-gothic style - too is back on the road at 60 with Along Came A Spider, his latest in a career spanning five decades, while
MÖTLEY CRÜE released Saint Of Los Angeles just last July. Other ear-stopping veterans from the 1980s on the concert trail include California hardcore punk and heavy metal band
SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, and
SLAYER, icons of the trash metal scene.
But this year's most original heavy metal release comes just in time for the festive season - We Wish You A Metal Xmas And A Headbanging New Year. The compilation released this week features Christmas songs interpreted by the biggest names on the hard rock scene, such as Lemmy, Alice Cooper and Tony Iommi from BLACK SABBATH. But its trash metal interpretation of 'Silent Night' is likely to send the Christmas stable animals running for their lives.
