METALLICA: "We're Going To Start Recording On March 12th"; Band To Play More "Escape" Dates This Summer

METALLICA T60100 METALLICA check in with the following update:

"Greetings from not so sunny Northern California. We know that things have been pretty quiet here in web-land, so we thought we'd throw some shit your way... here goes...

We are finishing up the last couple weeks of pre-production on the album and... really... seriously... (drumroll)... we're going to start recording on March 12th. We're pretty fuckin' psyched about it and pretty fuckin' psyched to be sharing this experience with Rick.

But wait... there's more. We kinda sorta figured that by the time June rolled around, we would be ready for a break from recording (escape??) and since we had so much fun in Europe last summer, we thought "why not go back for some more fun and games?" We're planning to share the summer love with our friends in some different countries we didn't get to last year.. okay, fuck it, maybe one or two repeats. We haven't quite worked out all the details yet, but we thought that for once we really would be the first site to break a piece of Metallica news.

So keep your eyes open for more details in the next few... the plan right now is to head out in late June and hang out for a couple/three weeks. We might even do a certain festival that we've played 19 times in July that starts with a "W," maybe hit a certain band member's home turf... blah, blah, blah.

It's a start..."

METALLICA - Producer Rick Rubin Says Band Are "More Excited Than They Have Been In A Long Time About Making Music"

In an article from MTV News, producer Rick Rubin comments on "working with a variety of artists and hoping to give new life to a couple of them along the way", among them METALLICA.

Says Rubin: ""I saw [the warts-and-all Metallica documentary Some Kind of Monster], and it made me really nervous. Then we started working, and it's the opposite direction of that. They're really productive, really communicative — it seems like they really like being in the room together. It's a great process. They say they're more excited than they have been in a long time about making music. We're going to start recording in March. I asked them not to reinvent themselves so much as to make a defining album, like the purest of what Metallica is. That's the aim, so we'll see what happens."

Read the full article at this location.

Metallica's follow-up to their 2003 release St. Anger is expected to be released later this year through Warner Bros.

Earlier today the band issued the following update: "Hey... back again with more from Nor Cal. So by now most of you have hopefully heard that we are planning on spending a few weeks this summer touring, visiting some places in Europe that we didn't "escape" to last year. We are still sorting out the final details, schedules, etc. for our little break from recording the next album, but in the meantime, we figured that you have debated/theorized long enough over last week's "W" clue... so here goes... yes, it is the Werchter Rock Festival in Belgium... we'll be playing there on July 1st. No, we haven't really played there 19 times... only four. All the festival and ticketing information is below. Keep your eyes open for more shows... we'll post them as they get confirmed."

METALLICA To Play Vienna, Austria In July

METALLICA have issued the following update:

"Yet another update from the confines of HQ with a show confirmed on the summer tour... the schedule is coming together and we've got another stop on our little European jaunt for you... drumroll, please... Vienna, Austria on July 5th at Rotundenplatz.

And here's the cool part - this one is a Metallica show, the first all Metallica show in Austria in over ten years! Okay, of course we will have a few cool opening bands, still to be determined, like a few other things on this tour, but your friends here are trying to bring you this information as it happens... day and night. Speaking of friends... if any of our Metalli-friends in Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, or Liechtenstein want a dose of Metallica this summer, you might want to check this show out because unfortunately it will be our only one in your neck of the woods.

Also, the un-named tour is no longer without a name courtesy of Met Clubber TR3NDKILLR ... "Sick Of The Studio 07"... it's now, um, official.

Keep watching... we'll have a couple more shows to tell you about later this week."

As previously reported, Metallica are headlining the 11th edition of the Rockwave Festival, which will take place July at 1st - 3rd at Terra Vibe in Malakasa, Greece. Metallica are confirmed for July 3rd. Tickets will go on sale on Wednesday, 21st February 2007.

Metallica are also been confirmed for the Werchter Rock Festival on July 1st in Werchter, Belgium.

Metallica's follow-up to their 2003 release St. Anger is expected to be released later this year through Warner Bros.

METALLICA Begin Recording New Album; Studio Photos Available

METALLICA T62274 METALLICA have issued the following update:

"Metallica left the comfort of HQ this week to descend upon the greater Los Angeles area to begin recording their 9th original album. This is the first time they've recorded outside of the Bay Area since they spent an eternity at One-On-One Studios recording The Black Album in '90 and '91. The last couple days have been devoted to each band member working out the right sounds, including Lars who remembered to turn on the snare and Kirk who played a solo! The big, shiny red button was finally pushed today - and the wait begins."

It's Official: METALLICA Is A Girl!

A Swedish court has ruled that the parents of a seven-month-old girl in Kungälv, Sweden can name their child Metallica, according to the Swedish newspaper GP. The girl's parents wanted to give their daughter a name that combined their first names. After picking Metallica and checking twice with the Swedish tax agency Skatteverket if the name was acceptable, they were told that it shouldn't be a problem since there is already a girl in Sweden called Metallica. When they filed Metallica as one of the girl's three first names, the Skatteverket suddenly objected, claiming that the name was inappropriate because a famous hard rock band bears that name and the fact that it's too close to the word "metal." The parents filed an appeal with the district court, which has now ruled that the use of the name won't pose any problems for either the girl or anyone that she comes in contact with. One member of the jury objected to the ruling, claiming that the name probably will cause discomfort to whomever bears it.

METALLICA Guitarist Says New Album Has "Middle Eastern" Sound

Launch Radio Networks has issued the following report from Don Kaye:

METALLICA lead guitarist Kirk Hammett said in the latest issue of So What!, the band's official fan club magazine, that many of the songs on the band's new album have a "Middle Eastern" or "Arabic" sound to them. Hammett explained, "There is a really unusual theme that's working its way into the music. I'm not really sure how to react to it... a lot of the music has an eastern harmonic flair to it, a harmonic minor flair to it, and when I say harmonic minor... those sounds are distinctly Arabic sounding or Middle Eastern sounding, and you hear them in all the songs."

Hammett added that he was unable to figure out how those influences crept into the band's music, saying, "I don't know if it's just the zeitgeist, a sign of the times, or maybe because like, you know, Middle Eastern culture is so prevalent, or maybe the negative things about Middle Eastern culture. Maybe artists are conscious, just want to shine light on the positive aspects of Middle Eastern culture, i.e. the music."

Metallica began laying down its ninth studio album last week in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin, the first time that the band has recorded outside the San Francisco area in 16 years.

The group plans to work in the studio until early June, take a break for a month-long European tour, then finish recording in August. The disc will be released in either late 2007 or early 2008.

METALLICA Guitarist Having Problems Selling San Francisco Mansion

METALLICA 65502

According to Sfist.com, the real estate retraction appears to be stealing theoretical dollars from the pockets of a member of Metallica. According to The Wall Street Journal guitarist Kirk Hammett has cut the asking price of his Pacific Heights mansion to a mere $10.5 million from the $12.5 million he'd been seeking since 2005.

METALLICA Frontman James Hetfield - "For Some Reason We Like It Loud!"

METALLICA 65999

Legendary metal band METALLICA recently upgraded their Northern California rehearsal studio, replacing their old monitors with Meyer Sound's new MJF-212A self-powered stage monitors. The band also brought in six M'elodie ultracompact high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers and a 600-HP compact high-power subwoofer.

"As we started pre-production for the new album we needed PA and monitor upgrades. The speed and ease of set up of the Meyer gear is unbelievable. We truly took the monitors out of the box and plugged them in and we were done. That never happens, " says Metallica's equipment manager, Zach Harmon. "Over the years sound companies have struggled to keep Metallica happy. Meyer has managed to meet and exceed the band members' expectations."

Vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield uses a pair of MJF-212A monitors, while lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Rob Trujillo each use a single MJF-212A.

"The MJF-212A stage monitors are able to cut through and still sound full. I can hear and feel my voice above the wall of 'Tallica," says Hetfield. "For some reason we like it loud!"

The band's two stacks of three M'elodie cabinets per side serves the whole band well. "The M'elodies are great" says Mike Gillies, the band's studio engineer. "They're loud, clean and transparent, with lots of headroom and excellent dynamics. And they sound very natural, even without any EQ.

"Meyer's self-powered setup really answers the needs of a smaller rehearsal space," adds Gillies. "Setup is easy and flexible, and it's nice to ditch the fan noise and the amp racks, too. Meyer Sound is the obvious choice for any professional. It's great to have equipment that adapts to the room, instead of the room having to accommodate the equipment."

The band used Meyer Sound's MILO high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers and MICA compact high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers during their 2006 Escape From The Studio Tour dates in Estonia and Holland, and were reportedly impressed enough to check out the smaller M'elodie arrays for their rehearsal space. "Metallica demands the best," Gillies concludes. "Meyer Sound comes through with maximum output, clarity, and headroom, whether it's a mega-venue or a personal rehearsal space."

On June 28, Metallica will be out on their Sick of the Studio 07 tour in Europe with Meyer Sound equipment.

METALLICA - Another Album Update Issued

METALLICA site www.AllMetallica.com has issued the following update from "Crazy Metal"

Both (bassist) Rob (Trujillo) and (guitarist) Kirk (Hammett) has talked about the next album lately. It seems to be hard and heavy and if they are right, it must be well worth the wait.

Greece's Rock Hard magazine conducted an interview with Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo where he said: "I would say that this is album is dynamic, heavy, groovin' and you'll probably be excited to know that there will be guitar solos on it! In addition, Lars remembered to tune his snare drum properly this time! For me, this album incorporates part of the dynamic and character of Master Of Puppets, as well as the melodic style that people liked in the Black Album, as far as the melodies are concerned. As for the general music style, much of the current material is groovy, heavy, dynamic and surely interesting. I would say that it's different than St. Anger — in a good way, of course."

Kirk Hammett recently told Austrian web site Krone.at that he thinks the band's upcoming album is "the best album we've put out in, say, fifteen years." Hammett added that the record contains "just a really spectacular range of songs. This time we're not afraid to refer to our past music in order to create future music. People will see that we've kind of embraced our old vocabulary again and are using that vocabulary to express new things... I think with this album we're definitely going a little more back into our roots."

Hammett also hinted that the new record features "a lot of really, really fast songs, a whole lot of really heavy stuff. We changed our approach to writing the songs...There's a lot of changes that we've made, but I believe that they are all for the better."

Just days ago Metallica's official website reported, "Metallica returned to HQ this week after a short break to begin rehearsing for their Sick Of The Studio Tour. On June 14th, the winners from the Metallica: The Videos 1989-2004 DVD radio and online contests were treated to the HQ VIP treatment with a delicious BBQ, a few autographs, and an intimate performance from the band in the jam room. I think it is safe to say everyone had a great time. And here are some pics of the band working in the recording studio last month before the break."

METALLICA, SPINAL TAP Bring The Noise At Live Earth London

According to Billboard.com, Live Earth became Loud Earth tonight (July 7) as metal legends METALLICA and enduring comic rock trio SPINAL TAP rocked London's Wembley Stadium to its new foundations. Metallica, which headlines the stadium tomorrow, warmed up with a blistering set including 'Enter Sandman' and 'Nothing Else Matters'. Some of the band members also joined Spinal Tap on stage for its rendition of 'Big Bottom'. The latter band greeted the crowd with a cheery "Hello Wimbledon!" and also recreated its classic Stonehenge routine with a mini-model of the English landmark.

METALLICA - Live Recording Of 'The Other New Song' Streaming Online

A good (sound) quality live soundboard recording of METALLICA performing a new song, tagged as 'The Other New Song', at the Bilbao BBK Live Festival in in Bilbao, Spain on July 29th is now streaming online via YouTube. Click here to check it out.

As previously reported, Rolling Stone's Erica Futterman recently issued the following Metallica-related report:

"In an interview at the Rock Werchter Festival in Belgium over the weekend, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said the band had finished recording backing tracks for it's ninth studio album in early May and will resume studio work in August.

Ulrich estimated the record will be completed in October or November, but said he didn’t think the group’s first new album since 2003 would be released until early next year.

Though hesitant to assign a sound to the still-untitled album, Ulrich did say, “It doesn’t sound anything like St. Anger to me, it’s probably a little more dynamic and a little more varied. The one thing I can tell you is that [the songs are] quite long.”

METALLICA Fans Complain To BBC About Live Earth Interruption

The BBC has revealed that 413 METALLICA fans have complained when the band's set was cut short during the Live Earth concert broadcast this past Saturday, July 7). Metallica played 'Sad But True' and 'Nothing Else Matters' before host Jonathan Ross interrupted them to introduce a recording of 'Weather With You' by CROWDED HOUSE from Live Earth in Sydney.

METALLICA Fans Receive Apology From BBC

Guardian Unlimited has issued the following report from John Plunkett:

First Blue Peter viewers, then the Queen. Now the BBC has trotted out yet another apology, this time to a rather hairier contingent of its viewing public - heavy metal fans.

The corporation put out an apology after complaints from viewers that the set by METALLICA - whose hits include 'Enter Sandman' and 'Master of Puppets' - was not shown in full in its live coverage of the Live Earth concert from Wembley stadium.

The BBC was at pains to point out that the decision was not taken out of "prejudice about heavy metal music or any other music". Rather, it was a result of its efforts to broadcast from other Live Earth concerts from around the world.

To add insult to injury, however, the BBC misspelled the band's name on its complaints website.

"We received complaints from some viewers that the Metalica [sic] set was not shown in full," it said.

"This was a global event and we were keen to reflect the other concerts as well as the one in UK.

"We took editorial decisions in advance and on the day, about the times and places we would do that.

"Not all the tracks by every performer could be featured but we did transmit a full trail promoting our interactive coverage where digital viewers wanting to see the performances in full, could press the red button at any time.

"The concerts were very fluid in London and around the world and there was certainly no prejudice about heavy metal music or any other music; just a determination to do the best for the entire audience watching on BBC2 and BBC1 during the day.

"This is inevitably a fine balance and we cannot please everyone all of the time. However, we of course apologise if any particular viewers were disappointed."

-- This was the first time that Robert Trujillo has performed a show in Russia with any band.

-- Half the set contained songs that had never been performed in Russia. The following songs were performed live in Moscow for the first time: 'Fuel', 'Wherever I May Roam', 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)', '...And Justice for All', 'The Memory Remains', 'Disposable Heroes', 'Orion', 'Nothing Else Matters', and 'The Four Horsemen'.

-- This was also the first time that the full version of 'Master of Puppets' had been performed in Moscow.
