| PAUL STANLEY - "People May Like Me For My Music But That Doesn't Mean They'll Buy My Art" Daytona Beach News Journal correspondent Tom Iacuzio recently caught up with KISS frontman Paul Stanley to discuss the singer's budding career as a painter. The following is a brief excerpt from the story: Iacuzio: You were an art major and a graduate of the High School of Music & Art in New York City. How did that shape you? Stanley: "You know the great thing about specialized high school is that they allow for full academics plus a very intensive curriculum in music and art. For me it was great because I was a freak. In public school, I was the outcast, the freak. There, I was a freak in a school of freaks." Iacuzio: What got you in to painting? Stanley. "About seven years ago, I went through a divorce. You really get tired of screaming in a room by yourself. A friend of my said to me, 'You need to paint.' So I did. I wanted to be more about connecting emotionally than intellectually. Interestingly, once I started putting my own pieces up in my house among others I had owned, I started getting a lot of good feedback from them and at the time they weren't signed. I was still a little too self-conscious about them. But I realized that I really enjoyed it and if I could please myself, chances are I could please someone else." Iacuzio: Do you think your acceptance in the art world has anything to do with your musical fame? Stanley: "No doubt my celebrity got my foot in the door. But in the end, it's just my foot. It could still get slammed shut on. People may like me for my music but that doesn't mean they'll by my art. Mindless adulation is a rare commodity." Iacuzio: What do you make of all the success you have had with your paintings? Stanley: "I think I've really pleased myself. It's futile to please others as a first step. I'd rather fail on my own terms that try to create something I think others would like and then fail. It goes back to the whole idea of pleasing yourself. Then the flip side of that is that if I succeed, I don't share the credit." Go to this location to check out the complete story. | |

| PAUL STANLEY - "I Am Absolutely Fine!"As previously reported, on July 27th KISS performed as a trio for the first time ever at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, California after frontman Paul Stanley suffered a “cardiac event" during soundcheck where his heart "spontaneously jumped to 190 plus beats per minute where it stayed for over an hour", necessitating paramedics to start an IV and give him a shot to momentarily stop his heart and get it into a normal pattern. Stanley has issued the following update on his health: "To All My Friends And Fans, I wanted to let all of you know that I AM ABSOLUTELY FINE! I'm going to the gym as usual, painting as usual and will be going into the recording studio this week. Like many, I have had a rapid heart beat condition most of my life and I never have had any type of restrictions. When I've had an episode, although momentarily disrupting and taxing, it has no residual effect. This is nothing new and my doctors have known about it. In short, It doesn't change, hasn't changed and won't change my life. To make it clear... I WILL BE AT ROCK & ROLL FANTASY CAMP IN NY.. I WILL BE AT THE WENTWORTH ART GALLERY SHOW in Des Peres, MO. and anything else that's on schedule. I'm stoked and looking forward to it all. Thanks for the literally thousands of calls and e-mails from all of you. You all mean the world to me. Now ONWARD!" Paul | |

| PAUL STANLEY Discusses His Artwork - "There Are No Rules; The Possibilities Are Endless" Liza Grant Smith of Palm Beach Illustrated recently caught up with KISS frontman Paul Stanley. The following is an excerpt from the interview: For the better part of three decades, the canvas Paul Stanley was best known for painting was his own face. As a front man for the legendary rock band KISS, Paul has been electrifying audiences in his signature spandex and platform boots since the band's debut in the mid-1970s. These days, however, he has discovered another artistic passion, one that requires much more personal insight and much less personal makeup. His growing collection of original paintings, which began as a cathartic journey, has ended up resonating with art lovers, collectors and critics alike and earned him a whole new audience of devoted fans. PBI: What led you down this latest road of artistic expression? Stanley: "Divorce will jolt you in ways you may not expect. My best friend told me that I needed to paint. He seemed to feel I needed a release-and he was right. I went out and bought canvases and brushes and basically started on an emotional journey, a way to discover in myself things that were going on and put them on canvas. Kind of like stream-of-consciousness, but instead of words, using color and texture." PBI: How would you describe your art? Stanley: "It's about delving into myself. When I start a painting it's like a trip in which I don't know where I'm going, but I know when I've gotten there. It's really about finding an emotional connection and once I feel that's complete, I tend to believe that it will connect and resonate with someone else. So far I'm pretty right." PBI: What's the difference between creating music and creating works of art? Stanley: "Music has many more boundaries and frameworks that you have to work within. You have the structure of the music, the melody on top of that, and then the lyrics have to rhyme. Everything has to fit within parameters. Whereas with art, there are no rules. You don’t have the same limitations because if it can be done with color and texture, the possibilities are endless. Go to this location for the complete interview. | |

| PAUL STANLEY - "The People Who Are Coming To The (Art) Galleries, I'd Say Nine Out Of 10 Are Not Interested In Buying Portraits Of KISS" Richard Clough at the Los Angeles Business Journal Staff has filed the following report on KISS frontman Paul Stanley and his career as an artist: He used to paint his face black and white before strutting onstage to play heavy metal riffs in front of thousands of screaming fans. But these days, Kiss guitarist Paul Stanley is reinventing himself as a painter, putting acrylic on canvas in a private studio next to the pool behind his posh Beverly Hills home. The 55-year-old front man for the legendary makeup-wearing rock band has produced about 30 pieces that are being sold in galleries across the country. He is finding a receptive audience. Since exhibiting his work through the Wentworth Gallery chain in February, Stanley has sold roughly $2 million in original paintings and prints, with pieces going for as much as $75,000. "The amount of sales has been staggering," the soft-spoken rock icon said recently at his house. "That, to me, is a symbol of people embracing the art. But if I look at it purely as dollars, then I move away from what got me into this in the first place." When he started painting seven years ago, he did not intend to sell his artwork. At the time, painting provided an outlet through which he could vent the frustration of a painful divorce. He eventually put one of his works on a wall of his house. The encouragement he got from friends led him to continue. His subjects range from his father to the Statue of Liberty to abstract shapes - anything, he said, that reflects his emotional state at the time. It's different from songwriting, however. "When I paint, the options are limitless - there is no framework, except the edge of the canvas, and anything I can do in there is up to me," he said. "In songwriting, there are very set rules." While he spends much of his time with his wife and 1-year-old son these days, Kiss is still performing. And Stanley still wears leather pants that only a rock star could pull off - or pull on. But painting is now one of his primary creative pursuits. Stanley had 14 well-attended exhibitions of his art this past year and has another 14 scheduled in 2008, including shows Jan. 4 and 5 in New York. "For somebody that's a new artist, he's been doing very well," said Michael O'Mahony, chief executive of Miami-based Wentworth Gallery Holding Inc., which operates 31 galleries across the country. "His abstract work struck me as being very good - the emotion that is in the pieces comes out." Kiss fans often show up to the gallery exhibitions to meet Stanley, but buyers aren't always fans. Stanley painted portraits of himself and bandmates, which he thought would be among his best sellers. But as it turns out, the portraits are some of his least popular pieces. "The people who are coming to the galleries, I'd say nine out of 10 of them are not interested in buying portraits of Kiss," said Stanley. | |

| PAUL STANLEY Pays Tribute To JIMMY PAGE - "The Idea Of Being Able To Paint Sonically And To See Things Cinematically, That's What Makes Those Songs So Dramatic"
KISS frontman Paul Stanley's official website has been updated with the following report:
The December 2007 issue of Classic Rock magazine features the story Rock's Sonic Architect, in which a number of musicians pay tribute to LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page, the man who many believe shaped the very sound of rock music. In the article, KISS guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley had the following to say regarding Page's influential guitar-playing style:
"What was interesting about the guitar players in THE YARDBIRDS is how they all took their love of the blues and took it in different directions, particularly when you listen to Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, who seemed less purist and more adventurous. It's interesting to note that both THE JEFF BECK GROUP, which he formed after his stint in THE The Yardbirds, and Led Zeppelin came about at virtually the same time. Led Zeppelin's first show as Led Zeppelin was October of 1968, and they were rehearsing before that. The Jeff Beck ['Truth'] album came out in August '68. So both, in a sense, were incubating at the same time.
It's interesting to see how much broader and wider Jimmy Page's vision was of what was possible. Jimmy understood the complexities and subtleties of producing and arranging and brought that to his band. As brilliant as Jeff Beck was, that's something he couldn't do, whether it was the limitations of the people he played with, which he himself has said he found frustrating, or just the fact that consistently Jimmy Page turned out to be a visionary. Jeff Beck had to use his phenomenal guitar talents to try and compensate for a lack of interesting or original material.
The great thing about somebody like Jimmy Page is he brought a lot of influences and flavors to the pot. He was able to realize that for something to be heavy didn't mean that it had to be crude; that part of what makes something heavy was the depth and the intricacy or the lightness. Here's a guy who knew Celtic music, rockabilly, American folk and international music forms, besides the obvious admiration for Robert Johnson and everyone who followed in his footsteps. They [Zeppelin] were all fans of Sandy Denny and FAIRPORT CONVENTION. He understood that for something to be truly bombastic, it had to have depth, and depth doesn't come from cranking up an amplifier.
The idea of being able to paint sonically, to paint with light and dark and to see things cinematically, almost so that your canvas is large and your color choices you're not afraid to use the whole palette. That's what makes those songs so dramatic. If 'How Many More Times?' was just one guitar cranked, it wouldn't have anywhere near the drama that it has. To a listener who doesn't really understand what they're listening to, that's what it might sound like. But in fact it's so much more. And that becomes evident when you hear somebody trying to emulate it by just taking a guitar and cranking it up through an amplifier." | |

| PAUL STANLEY - "My Success In One Field Gets My Foot In The Door In Another, But You're Free To Slam The Door On My Foot" Rafer Guzman at Newsday.com has filed the following story on KISS frontman Paul Stanley: He's a painter who believes in art's cathartic power, its ability to communicate with viewers and its uncanny habit of revealing hidden facets of the painter himself. "Pretty heady stuff for a rock and roller," he admits. The artist is Paul Stanley - that's right, the guitarist from Kiss. For much of his life, the only thing he painted was a black star over his right eye, but in recent years he's been putting brush to canvas and selling his works for as much as $60,000 apiece. He's appearing and exhibiting his work Friday and Saturday at the Wentworth Gallery at Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City. Stanley cites Mark Rothko and Pablo Picasso as influences but is quick to point out that he's no art expert. During a recent phone interview from his Beverly Hills home, he depicted himself as driven by pure self-expression rather than by any desire to be hung in the Met. "That's really what the arts are about," Stanley said. "It's about finding yourself and defining yourself." Encouraged by a friend, Stanley took up painting around 2001 while struggling through a painful divorce. "I guess it was more constructive than throwing things at the wall, including myself," he said. He hung his first work, titled "Green Planet," at home, too embarrassed to sign it. But visitors routinely inquired about it, so he kept working. To date, he has made portraits of his bandmates (one, of bassist Gene Simmons, is titled "God Of Thunder"), but also several abstract works with titles such as "Infinite Solitude" and "Starting Over." "I wanted to paint from the soul," Stanley said. "The more I could keep it as a journey without a map, the more I'd be pleased with where I wound up." Stanley routinely shows up at galleries where his work is displayed - he does about 14 appearances a year - which can mean fending off fans holding Kiss albums and T-shirts to be signed. "It's the wrong place and the wrong time, and I don't do that," Stanley said. Still, he's aware that Kiss is the reason his paintings are on display. "No doubt, who I am gets me a certain entree," he said. "My success in one field gets my foot in the door in another - but you're free to slam the door on my foot." Paul Stanley appears from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday (January 4th and 5th) at Wentworth Gallery in Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City. Call 516-742-6100. | |

| KISS' PAUL STANLEY - "You Don't Go To A Concert To Hear New Music" Metal-Rules.com spoke top KISS legend PAUL STANLEY recently while on the road on the KISS Alive 35 tour. Here are a few excerpts from the chat: www.Metal-Rules.com: Since there's no new album to promote, could you tell a little about the theme for this new KISS Alive 35 tour? Stanley: "Well, I mean, obviously KISS Alive 35 is the 35th anniversary of the band and that's really all it is, you know. We're not at a point where every time we go on tour we need an album. Especially since it's really kind of a croc of shit, the idea that when you get down to it people talk about wanting a new album, but at the end of the day they don't really wanna hear a new album. Nobody does, nobody wants to hear THE ROLLING STONES' new album, nobody wants to hear THE WHO's new album. You don't go to a concert to hear new music, you want the band to go and do it, but then you don't wanna listen to it. I understand it, but why go in the studio and do an album when understandably people wanna hear the classics; those are the songs that mean something because they are connected to a time in somebody's life. A new song is fresh but it has no connection, so you listen to it five times and then you say 'That's really nice, now play 'Love Gun'." www.Metal-Rules.com: So this tour is basically a celebration of your 35 year career? Stanley: "Yes, plus when we're in Europe, we'll be doing all of Kiss Alive. So, you know, here we do it a little different because Australia we have a different kind of relationship with, we try to include a broader spectrum of music." www.Metal-Rules.com: Like you mentioned, you've decided to perform the Alive album in its entirety in Europe. How come, since you're not even wearing the Alive costumes on this tour but the ones from the Destroyer era? Stanley: "Well because we're not recreating the past, we're celebrating it. It's not about putting on the KISS Alive show, it's not about dressing, it's not about making a statement by recreating that moment, the costumes or what we wanted to wear because we've worn the other, you know. And we don't wanna come up with new costumes. Again, new costumes are almost like a new album. Somebody maybe saying 'When are you gonna have new costumes?', but if we showed up in new costumes they'd say 'Why aren't you dressed like KISS?' So at some point we have to do what we think makes the most sense." Read more here. | |

| PAUL STANLEY Comments On Reports Of Upcoming KISS Clone Reality TV Show Picture by Gerhard Wimmer In the wake of numerous reports stemming from an interview done in Norway regarding an upcoming KISS clone reality TV show, frontman Paul Stanley has issued the following statement: "A KISS clone reality show? First of all, contrary to what was said by anyone, there is no signed deal. Secondly, if we were to do a KISS II, and I don't rule that out, it would be in addition to, and never in place of KISS. If we were to do it, I know it would be done in a groundbreaking way and would be tremendously entertaining. KISS has always defined itself by the rules we break, so what's the big surprise? We are in the middle of our biggest and most successful tour of Europe ever, playing to over a half million people, and neither KISS or I have any plans to stop afterwards!" | |
