| METALLICA And TOOL Conquer Korea The following report is courtesy of Cathy Rose A. Garcia from The Korea Times: Heavy metal fans came out in full force for METALLICA’s concert Tuesday night, at the Olympic Main Stadium, southern Seoul. Thousands of Korean and foreign fans braved the scorching summer heat for a chance to rock the night away with Metallica. Progressive metal band TOOL opened the show at exactly 6:30 p.m., but around a thousand fans were still outside the stadium waiting to be allowed to enter. Several foreigners were overheard complaining that they were missing Tool’s first performance in Seoul. Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey and bassist Justin Chancellor performed their grinding heavy metal songs, while their dark music videos were shown on the big screens flanking the stage. Tool’s best-known songs 'Sober' and 'Aenima'' had the crowd going crazy. The group did a good job pumping the crowd up for Metallica’s performance. After the group finished their set, the crowd became restless and impatient since it took almost an hour before Metallica appeared on stage. But the anticipation was worth it. Fans went wild when Metallica finally appeared. For almost two hours, Metallica gave a solid performance of their greatest hits. It is hard to believe Metallica was formed in 1981 or that its members are all in their early 40s. Vocalist James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo still showed they could still give an explosive performance. "Did you miss Metallica?'' Hetfield asked the crowd, who responded with a resounding cheer. "It’s good to be back,'' he said. Metallica last came to Seoul for a concert in 1998. To the crowd’s delight, Metallica performed their best-known songs such as 'One', 'Nothing Else Matters', 'Enter Sandman', 'For Whom The Bell Tolls'' and 'Wherever I May Roam','' as well as songs from their 8th album, such as 'St. Anger' and 'Frantic'.' Each of the Metallica members impressed the fans with their solo performances. The concert marked the 20th anniversary of the release of their album Master of Puppets,' which was released in 1986 and catapulted the group to stardom. Their performance of 'Master of Puppets'' had everyone bobbing their heads, throwing their fists to the beat, and chanting the chorus "Obey your master.'' Metallica also performed 'Battery',' and 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)' from the same album. Even if the songs were released in 1986, the songs’ music and lyrics still resonated with the crowd. After more than an hour, Metallica left the stage but returned several times for their encores. By the end of the night, the crowd was sweaty and tired but ultimately satisfied with Metallica’s concert. | |

| METALLICA - Release Date Confirmed For THE SCORCHED EARTH ORCHESTRA's Tribute To Master Of Puppets; Now Available For Pre-Order Vitamin Records have confirmed October 10th as the release date for THE SCORCHED EARTH ORCHESTRA's tribute to METALLICA's classic album, Master Of Puppets. The following bio appears at the label's website: "When hair metal ruled the world, Metallica provided the antidote: thrash metal. In 1986, the band released Master Of Puppets, regarded by many as the first thrash masterpiece. The album addressed military exploitation, the struggle of the mentally ill, and the prevalence of corrupt preachers in a society hungry for answers. Discussing political and social issues stood in stark contrast to the glam and spandex being peddled on radio and MTV. The fact that Master Of Puppets became Metallica’s first gold album is all the more incredible. Vitamin Records celebrates the 20th anniversary of this incredibly influential album. Highlighting and building upon the epic Master Of Puppets themes, The Scorched Earth Orchestra have fleshed out the entire album in this sprawling tribute. The full orchestral sound adds necessary weight while new sounds emerge from between Metallica’s notes. This is a true celebration of Master of Puppets and a welcome addition to any collection." The album is available for pre-order at this location. http://www.vitaminrecords.com/web/page.asp?pgs=product&catid=26&id=1117 | |

| METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett reportedly joined TOOL onstage during their headlining appearance at the Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday (August eighteen). According to one TOOL fan's eyewitness account posted at the ToolNavy.com web site, TOOL frontman Maynard James Keenan introduced Hammett by saying, "We have a special guest tonight. He's not [unintelligible], and he's not Elvis. Well, maybe he's their bastard son, Mr. Kirk Hammett." "[Kirk] then proceeded to come out and play guitar on 'Sober'. I've never been partial to METALLICA, and for those of you who are, I'm sorry to report that Kirk damn near butchered the song. His drunken so-called 'solo' was particularly sloppy and completely extraneous. Only the band coming back through to thrash the rest of the song out extremely hard saved it. Then he totally tripped out and flustered Adam [Jones, TOOL guitarist] by grabbing him for his 'hug' and kissing him on the mouth! Only to return at the end of the show to the stage to perform the 'we're not worthy!' bow on his knees before the guys. At least he realizes." | |

| MetallicA about Master of Puppets James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich recently spoke to Masa Ito's "Rock City" TV show in Japan about their decision to play the "Master of Puppets" album in its entirety to celebrate its 20th anniversary. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow: Hetfield: "My gut feeling is… I think 'Master of Puppets' represents a certain time in history. It was kind of the end of the Cliff Burton era in METALLICA, which is sad, but also very important. And maybe 'Master of Puppets' was the record that a lot of the early fans identified with. 'Cause after that Jason [Newsted] joined the band and then the popularity became bigger. And then the 'black' album… It was different after 'Master of Puppets'. So I think there's still an innocence about it and just a real 'fuck you, world' attitude to it still. And we weren't, I think, very influenced by all of the 'bigness' of METALLICA. Plus the songs — they have that energy, that fire; they're still youthful, but we were still growing, and the songs got grander and bigger, and [we added] more character to the songs. I think every song on that record is really good and it stands up to time."
"We had played almost all the songs live before, 'cause they were all, I guess, songs that needed to be played live. 'Orion' was the one song that we never really did live, and that seems to be one of the most fun — maybe because we didn't play it live, but… It's very emotional, even though there's no words to it, and having Rob Trujillo in the band now playing some amazing Cliff-style… it sounds better than ever. But I would say the songs themselves remind of an innocent METALLICA. The word 'innocent' in a… what kind of way?! Not stupid, but in a not tarnished, not ruined by fame. [Laughs] Even though we've tried our hardest to not be touched by popularity, it's impossible to not feel the effects of it. So the honesty and the innocence of 'Master of Puppets' — still sleeping, living at the studio; still roughing it and still having that fire. And only METALLICA on our minds — just METALLICA. Now it's different. There's family, there's a lot of things that are important in our lives. I think 'Master of Puppets' was… that was all we ever though about — ever." | |

| METALLICA Co-Manager Peter Mensch - "Bob (Rock) Is One Of The Five Best Producers On The Planet" Producer Bob Rock ( METALLICA) spoke to Reuters/Billboard recently about a number of topics. A few excerpts from the chat found http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/17/AR2006091700718.html follow: Rock first teamed with Metallica for its self-titled 1991 album (aka The Black Album). The Elektra set debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the chart for 281 weeks. Rock helmed Metallica's subsequent albums, through 2003's St. Anger. A behind-the-scenes look at that tumultuous project was featured in the following year's unflinching documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster. A petition that some 1,500 fans signed subsequently was posted online calling for Metallica to dump Rock, claiming he had too much influence on the band's sound. "The criticism was hurtful for my kids, who read it and don't understand the circumstances," Rock says. "Sometimes, even with a great coach, a team keeps losing. You have to get new blood in there." But Metallica co-manager Peter Mensch argues that Rock "nursed Metallica out of almost complete collapse on that record. Bob is one of the five best producers on the planet. But it was time to shake things up." Rick Rubin is producing the next Metallica album. | |
