METALLICA Drummer Lars Ulrich On New Album - "It's More Progressive And Nuttier, And The Songs Are Longer And Have Lots Of Crazy Guitar Solos"

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich spoke to Shay Quillen from Mercurynews.com recently about a number of topics including this weekend's Bridge School Benefit. Lars also provided an update on the band's ninth studio album and working with producer Rick Rubin. It's a change of pace for the band after recording its last four albums with Bob Rock.

"Rick has, obviously, a very different way of doing it," Ulrich says. "Everything about him is about the vibe, how we play with each other, how we connect to each other. He couldn't give a . . . [damn] what the individual sounds are like, or how perfect."
Ulrich says the change has "reinvigorated" the band, which now includes ex-OZZY OSBOURNE bassist Robert Trujillo.

"You know, when you get a little older, you get kind of set in your own ways," says Ulrich, 43. "It's good when the safety net and that whole thing is stripped away from you."

The next album, which Ulrich hopes to have completed by Christmas, follows St. Anger, a 2003 release that divided fans with its harsh, unrelenting sound and its lack of guitar solos.

"Certainly compared to the last record, there's a lot more dynamics and different shades - fast and slow, heavy and lighter," Ulrich says. He adds that the new material has more in common with the band's groundbreaking speed metal of the '80s than its bluesier offerings of the '90s. "It's more progressive and nuttier, and the songs are longer and have lots of crazy guitar solos."

New METALLICA Album To Feature Ten Songs That Are "Definitely All Over The Place" Says Lars

METALLICA Drummer Lars Ulrich On New Album - T89655 According to Gary Graff from Billboard.com, METALLICA are "a couple of nips and tucks" away from completing its next album, which is still on target for a September release, according to drummer Lars Ulrich.

During a conference call yesterday (May 15) promoting this year's Bonnaroo Music Festival, which Metallica will headline on June 13, Ulrich told reporters that the group hopes to wrap up work on the album in time for the Memorial Day weekend holiday. Metallica recently met with a graphic designer to begin planning the package, though there's no confirmed title for the album yet and the songs still have working names.

"We sort of promised ourselves that unlike all the records we made in the '90s, [which] were just completely stressed-out and just nutty, that we were gonna try and have a little more sane environment -- and we've actually, surprising mostly to ourselves, been able to keep to that," Ulrich said. "We've pretty much finished the music now, so all the next level stuff is just starting to go down."

Ulrich said Metallica came into the project with 26 songs, which were knocked down to 14 when the group started working with producer Rick Rubin. There are now 11 slated for the album, though Ulrich said "length issues" might mean one more has to be eliminated.

"These are long songs ... we're talking seven-minute, eight-minute, nine-minute nutty-ass songs," Ulrich revealed. "We don't make them long or short on purpose; you just kind of do what feels natural. We're not really gonna edit them, (so) we're gonna lose another one at some point in the next month or so and probably end up with 10."

Ulrich described the material as "definitely pretty all over the place. There's a lot of variation, a lot of fast, slow, melodic ... kind of hardcore, nutty super-fast speed stuff. It's a little more like how some of the earlier records were a little more dynamic within the songs."

METALLICA Single Is "An Eight-Minute Tour-De-Force That Features Some Of Their Fastest Playing Ever"

METALLICA Drummer Lars Ulrich On New Album - 90026

According to BW&BK sources, the new METALLICA album is scheduled for release in mid-September. The album will be preceded by an eight-minute single which is being described as "a tour de force that features some of their fastest playing ever." The record is being produced by Rick Rubin (SLAYER, RED HOT CHILI PEPERS) and mixed by Greg Fidelman.

Drummer Lars Ulrich told Billboard.com recently that the group hopes to wrap up work on the album in time for the Memorial Day weekend holiday (Monday, May 26th). METALLICA Butt Heads With Management Over New Album Leaks
METALLICA Drummer Lars Ulrich On New Album - 91353

METALLICA have issued the following update:

"While we occasionally enjoy reading the various comments, rumors, speculation, reviews, gossip and all the good that the internet brings, rarely do we feel the desire/need to respond to the 'blogosphere' . . . hey, everyone is entitled to have their thoughts and opinions, right? However, once we re-surfaced on Tuesday after a few weeks on tour in Europe, we were informed that someone at Q Prime (our managers) had made the error of asking a few publications to take down reviews of the rough mixes from the new record that were posted on their sites. Our response was 'WHY?!!! Why take down mostly positive reviews of the new material and prevent people from getting psyched about the next record. . . that makes no sense to us!'' So after a few rounds of managerial ear spank and sentencing everyone at Q Prime to 20 push-ups each, we figured why not take matters into our own hands and just post the links here on our site:

Kerrang!
Metal Hammer
The Quietus

You see, we have maintained an 'in the press' section here on Metallica.com for many years now, posting links to reviews of shows, album and DVD releases, and various other tidbits we've come across while surfing around. Some good, some not so good, but we put 'em all up . . . sort of the same way we treat our message boards on this site . . . welcoming all feedback.

So in the spirit of keeping this section current, we've put as many of the reviews of the rough mixes of the new record up here as we could find. If we missed any, let us know . . . and in the meantime, we're always adding, so peruse at your leisure."

As reported yesterday, a mysterious image has appeared at Metallica's official website under the news headline "???". No word whether it's a new band logo or relates to the artwork for the band's forthcoming album, due out in September. Watch fan-created video regarding the photo below:

voici une chronique de rolling Stone, en attendant l'album :

Rolling Stone's Brian Hiatt has posted a review of METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic", at this location. He writes, "Half of 'Death Magnetic''s tracks are over seven minutes long, with song structures that are not so much "verse/chorus/verse" as 'long intro/heavy jam/verse/even heavier jam/chorus/bridge/wild solo/outro.' This feels like the right move for an era where Guitar Hero is the new rock radio. And it's not as if Top 40 stations were going to slip in METALLICA between CHRIS BROWN and the JONAS BROTHERS, anyway. These songs rarely feel too long: At their best, they combine the melodic smarts of METALLICA's mature work with the fully armed-and-operational battle power of their early days. 'The End of the Line' is a freight-train rocker with a ricocheting riff and lyrics about a doomed, drug-addicted star. It builds to a frantic guitar duel between Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield, a wah-wah-crazed solo and, finally, a bridge that feels like an entirely new song. And the spectacular 'All Nightmare Long' — a thematic sequel of sorts to 'Enter Sandman' — combines relentless 'Master of Puppets' guitars with a Black Album-worthy chorus."

METALLICA Poised For No. 1 Debut In The US

According to Geoff Mayfield from Billboard.biz, a title missing from last week's Nielsen SoundScan Building charts is destined to be the next No. 1 on the Billboard 200, as METALLICA's new Death Magnetic has a shot at half million opener.

The band's first album through Warner Bros. was absent from SoundScan's interim charts, because the set had an off-cycle Friday street date of Sept. 12, in order to accommodate a global release date. SoundScan's Friday Building chart reflects sales from nine leading accounts through close of business on Thursday.

An informed source estimates the album will start in the neighborhood of 450,000-500,000 copies, with one unpredictable variable being a ticket/album bundle offered by Ticketmaster. The album was also packaged with "Guitar Hero" at Best Buy, sold through "Guitar Hero" platforms Xbox and Playstation and packaged with a Metallica-branded set of headphones by Skull Candy.

Metallica's last studio album, St. Anger, also had a Friday release in 2003, but in that case, the off-cycle street date was a rushed release, which the band's long-time label, Elektra, said was motivated by Internet leaks. Albums in the U.S. generally hit the market on Tuesdays.

St. Anger sold 419,000 copies during that abbreviated three-day window, securing its fourth chart-topping start on the Billboard 200. By the end of its first full week of sales, that set rang 780,000 units in its first 10 days on the market.

Metallica's last chart appearance was for soundtrack EP Some Kind of Monster, which debuted No. 37 in 2004.

If projections hold, Death will be the seventh Metallica album in the Nielsen SoundScan era to start with more 300,000 copies in its first frame.
