Cliff Burton Tribute Scheduled For September In Kansas
Cliff Burton (metallica) 49905yo7

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of METALLICA bassist Cliff Burton's untimely death in 1986, metal disc jockey Drewcifer (creator of the KNAC.COM classic metal show The Vault and soon-to-be new host of The Pit on KMKF 101.5FM) will be hosting a Cliff Burton tribute night at PJ's Pub in Manhattan, Kansas on September 26.

Dubbed Cliff 'Em All Again, the tribute will feature Cliff-era Metallica music and memorabilia all night, including many live and rare recordings from his personal collection over the years. Classic Metallica trivia and raffle giveaways, as well as personal accounts and stories from fans and patrons can also be expected.

Commented Drewcifer: "I can't believe that no one in the metal media has yet to mention the upcoming 20th anniversary of Cliff's death. It's sad really, because his passing still lingers with the older fans of the band and heavy metal in general, and no one has been able to display talent like his since."

Cliff Burton died on September 27, 1986 in the infamous black ice bus accident in Sweden while Metallica were en route from Stockholm to Copenhagen, Denmark supporting Master Of Puppets. Memorial services were held in his hometown of Castro Valley, CA on October 7, 1986.

"I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news that day, and my friends actually didn't believe me when I tried to spread the word," Drewcifer said. "I was a junior in high school and had been into Metallica for years already. It was quite a blow at the time and the wound has never fully healed with many fans. His death was as much of a shock at the time as Dimebag's in 2004, and every bit as undeserved. The Major Rager on the 4-string Motherfucker will always live on in the hearts of die-hard metal fans."

METALLICA - Cliff Burton Memorial Day Photos Available
Cliff Burton (metallica) 52190iw6
As previously reported, a Memorial Day in honor of late METALLICA bassist Cliff Burton was held yesterday (September 30th) at The Gyllene Rasten venue (www.gyllenerasten.se/), located in Ljungby, Dörarp, Sweden. The event included performances from Swedish acts AGE OF FURY and MORBID INSULTER. Click on the photo on the left to view the Cliff Burton Memorial plaque. More photos can be viewed here. http://www.thinlizzyguide.com/metallica.htm

According to Wickopedia, while on the European leg of the Damage Inc. Tour, Burton and Kirk Hammett (Metallica guitarist) drew from a stack of cards to see who would get the top bunk on the bus. Burton picked the Ace of Spades and so he got to sleep on Kirk Hammett's bed, as Hammett recalls on MTV's 1992 bio of the band as well as in the VH1 show Behind The Music. Burton died (on September 27th, 1986) when the band's tour bus hit black ice (though it is still disputed that they may have crashed because the driver had been drinking) and flipped over in rural Sweden (Kronobergs län). As the bus was skidding out of control and eventually rolled over on the grass, Burton fell through a window, landed underneath the bus and was crushed. Burton was crushed again when the winch cable lifting the bus off him snapped, dropping the bus on him a second time. Since his death European tour buses have plywood boards fitted to all windows next to the bunk beds. These boards are commonly referred to as 'Burton Boards' in his honour. The other people on the bus (frontman James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, Hammett, the drum technician, and two guitar technicians) recount seeing Burton's feet sticking out from under the bus. That sight has haunted them for a long time. Burton's body was cremated. At the ceremony, the instrumental 'Orion' from the album Master Of Puppets was played. Subsequently, Metallica never played 'Orion' in full live until June 4, 2006 when they performed the album Master Of Puppets in its entirety to mark the 20th anniversary of its release. Previously, bits of the song had been used to bridge between other songs.

METALLICA's James Hetfield Remembers Bassist Cliff Burton

METALLICA frontman James Hetfield reminisced about late bassist Cliff Burton to Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter on the occasion of a "memorial day" held in Burton's honor on September 30th in the Swedish town of Ljungby. Burton was killed near the town just over 20 years ago, on September 27th, 1986, when the band's tour bus flipped over. Hetfield said that Burton's contribution to Metallica was still being felt two decades later, explaining, "We never would have written guitar harmonies or instrumentals or songs with very intricate melodies and orchestrations without Cliff. We wouldn't be where we are today."

Hetfield also said that he thinks Burton would approve of the band's musical evolution over the years, adding, "And now, especially with our new bassist Rob (Trujillo) playing so powerful and with his fingers just like Cliff, I have a feeling that he likes what we're doing."

A group of Swedish fans recently erected a memorial stone near the spot where Burton was killed. Hetfield called the bassist "one of the icons that won't be forgotten."

Metallica is currently working with producer Rick Rubin on its ninth studio album, which is planned for release in 2007.
