IRON MAIDEN - New Single Streaming At BraveTunes; Excerpt From Upcoming BW&BK Cover Story Available!
Iron Maiden - Page 2 T49388ek1

Brave Tunes (on the left hand side of the page) is currently streaming the new IRON MAIDEN single, 'The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg'. The track is pulled off the band's forthcoming album, A Matter Of Life And Death which is due out on August 28th worldwide, except North America, which will see the album released on September 5th.

BW&BK spoke to founding bassist Steve Harris at great lengths recently for a major cover story that will appear in BW&BK #99, out in early September. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

BW&BK: There’s a big difference between the songs about war on this album, like ‘The Longest Day’ and ‘These Colours Don’t Run’, and the likes of ‘Aces High’ and ‘The Trooper’. Has age made you approach the subject in a more serious way?

Harris: “When you’re a young kid and write a song like ‘Aces High’, it’s all about adrenalin and that’s the way stuff comes out, but now we’re older it’s slightly different. Most of the songs that we’ve written about war aren’t glorifying war in any way. We’re just trying to get across that there’s a big difference between young boys playing with toy soldiers and all the talk about fighting for glory or whatever, and the reality of being a soldier fighting in a war, which is horrendous. Bruce wrote the lyrics for ‘The Longest Day’ so I can’t say what he was specifically getting at. Bruce was in the Territorial Army himself, so he has a better idea of what’s involved than I do, I think. I respect people who go to war. There’s many reasons why people have to go to war and some of them are good and some of them are terrible, but these kids join the army and they have to go. It doesn’t matter whether they agree with the reasons for fighting or
not. If you’re a soldier and you’re told to go, you go. I’ve always had respect for the military because they have to face these awful situations and it must be pretty scary, even though they’re trained and they probably want to go and do their job. It’s pretty terrifying just thinking about it.”

BW&BK: I guess we’re all pretty damn lucky to be able to listen to or perform songs about war without having to experience it first hand...

Harris: “That’s true. During the first Gulf War, we found out that one of the Queen’s regiments were playing ‘Run To The Hills’ as they were going into battle. I thought that was amazing. Not in a positive way necessarily, and it’s kind of scary at the same time, but I was quite proud of that. It gives me goose-bumps just thinking about it. I’ve got goose-bumps now! I suppose when I was a kid I was always taught to be proud of the flag and the whole British thing,
doing your duty, doing what needs to be done. I suppose some of our songs are trying to put you in that position, asking how you’d feel in that situation. It’s important to think about these things, isn’t it?”

IRON MAIDEN Frontman On New Record - "We Are Still Getting To Grips With The Album Ourselves"
Iron Maiden - Page 2 49886jj2

The following report is courtesy of MTV.com:

Since 1999, when longtime singer BRUCE DICKINSON returned to the fray after an eight-year absence, IRON MAIDEN have striven to write the ultimate metal album — one that was complex without being overindulgent and memorable without being predictable. Now, following 2000's ambitious but spotty Brave New World and 2003's titanic but overblown Dance of Death, Iron Maiden have achieved their goal with their new album, A Matter of Life and Death. And, compared to previous efforts, they barely even tried.

"We did the whole thing in just a shade under four months," said Dickinson of the LP, due September 5. "We don't get together to make records that much anymore, so when we finally did, we were really excited, and that excitement turned into this really productive period."

The band started writing in late 2005, and right away the machine clicked. There was a complete absence of the types of arguments that used to hamstring the bandmembers.

"In the past we may have been a bit more uptight, but we're all just seriously relaxed and chill about things now, so we're able to work well together and not get worked up," Dickinson said. "Ideas were just buzzing through the air, and everybody was listening to each other and feeding off the energy."

Iron Maiden rehearsed the new songs at home in early 2006, then entered Sarm West Studios in London with producer Kevin Shirley, who has worked on their last three records. But while they had booked three months, they were done in two.

"We haven't worked that fast since we did Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind in the early days, and back then we didn't have a choice," Dickinson said. "We were just having a great time, writing really good music, and then all of a sudden we were like, 'Wow, we're done!' "

Nothing about A Matter of Life and Death sounds rushed. Most of the songs are more than seven minutes long, and the album is packed with complex rhythms, sudden tempo shifts and acrobatic musicianship. Vocals soar from a whisper to a wail; keyboards swell through atmospheric interludes before being trampled by clattering drums and rabid bass lines. And buzzing guitars gallop, stop, saunter, then gallop some more.

"We are still getting to grips with the album ourselves, and we made it," Dickinson laughed. "It really is tremendously deep. There's a huge amount of stuff on it because we just didn't see any point in trying to make an album that was just like all the others. There's lots of bands making albums with five-minute pop-metal songs, so we thought, 'Let's do something really extraordinary.' "

The band, whose last U.S. jaunt was a controversial stint on the 2005 Ozzfest, will launch a comparatively brief North American tour that begins on October 4 in Hartford, Connecticut, and winds down October 21 in Irvine, California. Then the band will launch a lengthy European tour and may not return to North America before its next album.

"We have no interest in hitting dozens of cities in America, because let's be honest - there probably aren't enough Iron Maiden fans to justify an extensive tour on the scale we like to play. Do we think Iron Maiden could sell out a 20,000-seat arena in Iowa? Probably not. So we'll do these big shows on our terms indoors and then see what happens with the record."

IRON MAIDEN Puts Sanctuary Contract Up For Review

The following report is courtesy of Nick Hasell from Timesonline.co.uk:

IRON MAIDEN, one the world’s best-selling heavy metal bands, has put its contract with Sanctuary Group up for review amid talks to take its business to Andy Taylor, the music group’s ousted co-founder and former chief executive.
The loss of Iron Maiden would be a severe blow to Sanctuary. The band, famously spotted by Mr. Taylor in a London pub in 1979, are its oldest client. The discussions come ahead of the European release next week of A Matter Of Life And Death, Iron Maiden’s latest album, and the start of a world tour in October, which promise to make the band a particularly significant contributor to Sanctuary’s near-term profits.

Pete De Vroome, managing director of Iron Maiden Holdings, the corporate entity that encompasses the band’s interests, said of the contracts with Sanctuary: “All of these are under review”. He confirmed that there had been discussions with Mr Taylor, which are thought to have been under way for several months.

It is thought that the principal, and most lucrative, deal under negotiation is to take Iron Maiden’s management contract, currently with Sanctuary Artist Management, to Mr Taylor. However, the band also has numerous subsidiary contracts with Sanctuary.

Last night, a source close to the company said: “All artists’ contracts come up for discussion from time to time. This one is no different.” Mr Taylor could not be reached for comment.

The Classic Metal Show To Celebrate New IRON MAIDEN Album Next Weekend

The Classic Metal Show, heard 9 PM - 3 AM (EST) Saturdays at this location http://www.theclassicmetalshow.com/ have issued the following update in regards to next week's (September 2nd) show:

"A big show is planned this week. First and foremost, one of the single most anticipated releases of 2006 is finally hear! That's right, the new record from IRON MAIDEN, A Matter Of Life And Death is finally upon us. A record that Chris is calling the band's best since Powerslave, this is destined to be in everyone's top 5 at the end of the year. We'll be doing a New Music Listening Party for A Matter Of Life And Death this week, as well as regaling in some of the fine work the band has done in the past!

Additionally, the band RIOT has a longstanding history of playing some of the best straight up metal ever. Even though they never broke big time, they have consistently created brilliant music. Now is no exception. They have a brand new album called Army Of One which just rocks hard...so hard that we'll be doing a New Music Listening Party for it.

Next up, we missed them last week due to scheduling conflicts, but rumor has it that we'll be touching base with someone from SHARK ISLAND this week. Last week we featured the new release, Gathering Of The Faithful, and this week we'll catch up with the band to talk about the reunion, possible touring, and anything else that comes up.

Finally, show friend JACK FROST has finally gotten around to promoting his solo release, Out In The Cold. Since it's a great record and we like Jack, we figured that we'd have Jack come back on to "officially" promote his great solo release. We'll find out what's going on with Jack, what happened with Marshall Law, and we'll experience Chris' impression of Jack to be sure! It's gonna be a great show, so tune in early and stay all night!"

IRON MAIDEN Bassist Steve Harris - "We Don’t Write What People Want To Hear"
Iron Maiden - Page 2 50393iq4

IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris is interviewed in the latest edition Metal Hammer Spain. Here are a few excerpts from the chat posted at
MaidenFans.com. http://www.maidenfans.com/index.php?ACT=module&name=rwnews&area=article&nid=2262

Q:
It is quite sure that the fans might frown and not like the album on the first listen Why is it so dark?
Steve:
"Everybody has a different way to see things. We have been doing interviews the whole week and some of us went to Japan to do promo last week and everybody has a different idea of what they think this album means. Right now I have been interviewed by 3 Spanish journalists and all of you have found it a ark one. Previously just 2 journalists have mentioned it. However, it really goes on well with the opening track. ‘Different world’ talks about the different perspectives that people see things with. I think that the record has more hope than darkness, with a huge progressive feel. It’s quite epic. We have more long songs than ever and don’t ask me why, as we never plan these things."

Q:
Do you think that Maiden music can just head into the progressive direction? Why not a change towards something more extreme? To name just a possible example, that is.

Steve:
"No, because we did not grow up with Death metal. Hence, it can not influence us. Our musical influences come from the 70s and that is what you can hear in our music. Death metal is out there, but it doesn’t say anything to us when we are writing tunes, as we did not grow up listening to that music."

Q:
I was referring to if the progressive path is the only one to follow in your evolution.
Steve:
"But we don’t think about it. We don’t think about evolving to one place or another. That’s the reason why the album has songs much more epic, because we haven’t even thought about it.

Q:
The band sounds much more organic than other bands from nowadays. Were you trying to find that sound or do you think that it is the definite Maiden sound?
Steve:
"The only thing we have changed in purpose in this occasion is the bass sound. In the last 2 albums I think that I went away from my classical bass sound, due to the presence of 3 guitars. So, we looked back and listened to our early stuff to recover the bass sound of our first four albums. I told this to Kevin and I think it now sounds much better, with more space for the drums. I think that’s the only thing we wanted to intentionally change, the rest came naturally. And I agree that the album sounds much more organic. We do what we do and that’s the result of it. Kevin is really settled now. This is his third album with us. He knows how we all work and knows how to get the best possible sound from this band."

Q:
Without analyzing it deeply, do you think that a casual Maiden teenager fan will find this album easy to listen? It is difficult to digest.
Steve:
"I don’t think in that. If I wanted to catch the attention of teenagers I would write material in vein of Bullet for my valentine, with vocal lines more focused to what’s on, but we don’t give a fuck what’s on. We want the young fans, because that’s what makes a band evolve, but we also want the other fans, we want all the fans, old, new and all in between. We don’t write what people want to hear and we have never done it, because people do not know what they want to hear."

IRON MAIDEN - Annual Christmas Card Contest Officially Launched For 2006
Iron Maiden - Page 2 50644jb3

The following call-to-arms has been posted at the official IRON MAIDEN website:

"You folks know the drill by now...

The last few years we've thrown the design of the official Iron Maiden X-mas card open to you guys. This is the card that gets sent to FC members, to friends of the band... and to the last minute people we realise we've forgotten Smile Each year, the standard has been amazingly high and we've had a real challenge agreeing on a winner.

So, we'd like you guys to do it again. Send us your designs - conforming to the specs below - and the winner will be picked by Rod, be printed and sent to loads of people. The winner will get a credit on the card and a big bag of groovy Iron Maiden stuff...

Your design needs to be A5 size (about 21 by 15 cm) - it's up to you which way round it goes (portrait or landscape). The picture is entirely up to you.

Now here's the important stuff - as the design will be printed, you need to make sure you have a high-resolution image that you can send us if we choose your card. If you're hand painting or drawing, no problem, but if you're creating your design from scratch in Photoshop or whatever, please make sure you do it at 600dpi and not at the lower resolution you'd use for things that are going to be displayed only on a monitor. Keep the original in a very safe place, and send us a copy.

Please send in your submissions as lower-resolution JPEG or GIF images - we don't need you to send the huge hi-res file until we choose the winner.

Please make sure that you name your file with your own name - eg: jimsmith.jpg - #cos otherwise we get 200 files called 'maiden.jpg'!

Email you entries to us here and please make sure you include your contact details.

Closing date for entries is 15th October. Good luck!"

The image on the left is last year's winning entry.

IRON MAIDEN - Orchestral Tribute To Piece Of Mind Due September 19th; Artwork, Samples Available

Vitamin Records has confirmed a September 19th release date for the IRON MAIDEN tribute album, The Hand Of Doom Orchestra Plays Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind: The Orchestral Tribute. The album is described as follows at Vitamin website:

"Amongst the dust and debris of time and trends, Iron Maiden stands alone. Fans readily embrace the band’s impossible-to-copy mixture of intelligent lyrics, complex music, and memorable visuals. While Number Of The Beast may receive the critical accolades, the follow up, Piece of Mind, also proves to be an undisputed masterpiece. Between exhilarating yet stark portrayals of battle and clever adaptations of literature, guitars thunder, the rhythm gallops, and Bruce Dickinson’s voice soars. Piece Of Mind ultimately bursts with songs critical to Iron Maiden’s career. The Hand Of Doom Orchestra triumphantly performs Piece Of Mind in its epic entirety. The power of classical music has never been lost on Iron Maiden. On this album, violins, woodwinds, cello, and classical guitar combine to create immense and rich instrumental renditions of 'Revelations' and 'The Trooper'. The Hand Of Doom Orchestra creates a symphonic masterpiece that retains Iron Maiden’s timeless vitality."

IRON MAIDEN Guitarist Adrian Smith - "In Britain, You Grow Up With The Backdrop Of War"
Iron Maiden - Page 2 50970zl5

John Powell from Jam! Showbiz spoke to IRON MAIDEN guitarist recently about a number of topics. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

The Iron Maiden musical catalogue is littered with songs exploring the glory and the horror of war. The theme is nothing new to the band. With their latest release A Matter of Life and Death, the rock veterans have dedicated an entire album to the subject matter which today, seems rather appropriate considering the state of the world.

"In Britain, you grow up with the backdrop of war and also all the terrible things that happened in Northern Ireland. I grew up watching that on television. It is a big part of your psyche here," Smith told JAM! Showbiz down the line from England.

As they sat down to plot out the album, Smith says the band didn't plan on the war theme. It just came about naturally as the songwriters collaborated, bounced ideas off each other and discussed the things that weighed heavily on their minds.

"Expressions and words just come into your head when you hear a piece of music when you are writing. The themes just sort of suggest themselves and sometimes almost write themselves too," Smith explained. "The music we came up with was quite powerful. We just needed some big themes and so with all the stuff that is going on in the world today, it seemed relevant."

Taking into account the heated subject matter, the songs themselves are not preachy in tone. After listening to the album, you aren't left with the feeling that you have had a front row seat at a sermon. If you are looking for debates on weapons of mass destruction or the upper class versus the lower class in times of war, you won't find them on A Matter Of Life And Death. Instead, the band humanizes the theme by delving into the experience of being a soldier no matter where it is you call home, and the far-reaching implications that even distant conflicts can have on us all.

"First and foremost, music is an art and you don't want to be preaching at people. A Matter Of Life And Death is observation and comment set to music," said Smith. "It is probably the only good thing about getting older. You gain a bit more of a wider view of things and you get more philosophical, which is great for lyric writing."
